乙 Yi: One Heaven Stem, Nine Earth-Stem Combinations
A practical guide to reading 乙 above another stem in a Qi Men Dun Jia chart—what the traditional pattern suggests, and how it may show up in everyday decisions.
乙 Yi is Yin Wood: flexible, persistent, and capable of finding a path around obstacles. In a stem combination, however, Yi does not speak alone. The Earth Stem below it changes the story. This guide translates nine 乙 Heaven-Stem pairings into plain-language possibilities for business, career, relationships and learning.
The nine 乙 Yi combinations at a glance

Practical interpretation of each pairing
乙 + 乙 — Fuyin 伏吟: review before moving
The same stem repeats. Progress may be stable but slow, so forcing a breakthrough can be counterproductive. Business: maintain the operation rather than rushing expansion. Career: work quietly and refine your case instead of pressing for promotion. Relationships: give a recurring issue room to settle. Study: revision and consolidation are more suitable than expecting an instant leap.
Practical question: What can I improve while I hold my position?
乙 + 丙 — visibility, with the Star and chart deciding its quality
A supportive Star can point to promotion, recognition or relocation; an adverse wider chart can instead bring relationship friction or separation concerns. Business: a launch or public presentation may benefit from visibility when supporting factors agree. Career: consider a promotion or transfer opportunity, but examine the Star. Relationships: avoid turning a conditional warning into a claim that separation will occur. Study: presentations and recognition may be highlighted.
Practical question: Is being more visible genuinely supported by this chart?
乙 + 丁 — knowledge, communication and education
This is a favourable teaching-and-learning pattern in the guide. Business: training, consulting, proposals and documentation fit well. Career: writing, certification or sharing expertise may bring recognition. Relationships: clear communication can support the bond. Study: exams, preparation and qualifications are especially relevant. The full chart still determines timing and strength.
Practical question: How can I make knowledge or a written plan work for me?
乙 + 戊 — 利阴害阳: favour the quieter route
Quiet, behind-the-scenes Yin matters may fare better than assertive, public-facing Yang action, especially when an unfavourable Door weakens the chart. Business: focus on planning and back-end work rather than aggressive expansion. Career: support or preparation may be steadier than a high-profile push. Relationships: a gentle, private conversation is preferable to confrontation. Study: consistent independent work may outperform last-minute pressure.
Practical question: Can I advance this discreetly before making it public?
乙 + 己 — 日奇入雾: clear the fog first
Information may be obscured or constraints hidden. The guide notes that an Open Door may create a favourable Earth Dun condition, but a good Door alone should never be treated as automatic success. Business: verify assumptions and contract details. Career: clarify blocked processes or unclear expectations. Relationships: ask what remains unsaid before committing. Study: revisit gaps in understanding and check the requirements.
Practical question: What fact am I missing, and how can I verify it?
乙 + 庚 — conflict around interests or ownership
The traditional cue in the guide includes inheritance disputes and self-interested tension. In modern use, look for contested ownership, competing priorities or hard bargaining—not an inevitable lawsuit. Business: protect shareholding and asset arrangements. Career: manage disagreement with colleagues or supervisors through evidence and procedure. Relationships: reduce blame where family or assets are involved. Study: avoid unproductive rivalry.
Practical question: Which interest is disputed, and can the terms be documented?
乙 + 辛 — 青龙逃走: prevent avoidable loss
This pairing traditionally suggests departure, leakage or something going missing. Do not assume a person will leave merely because this pair appears. Business: tighten controls over money, information, assets and key personnel. Career: consider how to retain support and avoid an impulsive exit. Relationships: withdrawal or a trust gap needs a calm conversation. Study: safeguard materials and protect continuity in the plan.
Practical question: What support or resource could slip away if I do nothing?
乙 + 壬 — 日奇入地: resolve hierarchy confusion
Unclear authority can fuel complaints, disputes or friction with rules. Severe outcomes are not predetermined. Business: define contractual roles and keep a written record. Career: avoid challenging authority impulsively; seek the right channel. Relationships: address power imbalance with boundaries and, where useful, mediation. Study: confirm instructions, assessment criteria and submission requirements.
Practical question: Who decides, who acts, and what has been agreed in writing?
乙 + 癸 — 华盖逢星: step back to see more clearly
Retreat, reflection, confidential planning and avoiding trouble are favoured themes. This is not necessarily an invitation to hide indefinitely. Business: research and risk review suit the moment better than a public push. Career: behind-the-scenes work can be productive. Relationships: space may help, but secrecy can create distance. Study: deep research and quiet revision are supported.
Practical question: What would become clearer if I paused and researched first?
A simple reading example
Suppose your question is, “Should I announce a new business plan now?” and the relevant palace shows Heaven 乙 above Earth 戊. The pairing favours preparation and quieter work over a forceful public launch. You would then inspect the Door, Star, Deity, palace condition and relationship of the asker to the matter. If those support visibility, the judgment may soften; if they are adverse, a private pilot or further planning may be wiser. The pair alone cannot decide the outcome.
The principle to remember
Read the pairing, then read the chart. 乙's adaptability is a useful theme, but the Earth Stem changes its expression. Treat traditional names as pattern labels and the business, career, relationship and academic examples as teaching applications—not guaranteed events.

Learning note: This post adapts Patrick Sia's Stem + Stem 格局: Chaibu Practical Guide. Classical 十干克应 labels and practical life-aspect interpretations are kept distinct. Always weigh Door, Star, Deity, palace condition, Fuyin/Fanyin, emptiness, other relevant patterns and the question. Health symbols are not diagnoses; obtain qualified medical advice for symptoms. Qi Men is educational guidance, not medical, legal or financial advice.
